Wushu, the Chinese word for “martial arts” that’s now used to described a clss of fighting techniques, has become undoubtedly popular in the West together with other East Asian fighting styles.
Just like the West, China and the other Oriental nations have had their own “Renaissance” or golden age of development for their martial arts. That Golden Age has been the subject of several action movies and wuxia, Chinese epic martial art movies.
Now, you get to explore that world with Age of Wushu: Dynasty, a mobile MMORPG that lets you control a character coming from one of the main martial art schools in China. Your choices are, namely, the Wudang, Emei, Tangmen, Shaolin, Royal Guard and Beggar’s Sect warriors.
You can see these six options when you are customizing your character. Be sure to click on each one to see what special skills or specialties that they have. It’s a small description on the left side of your screen, besides your character. Explore all six, and then make your decision. You can also choose between a female and male character, although the Emei clan only allows female only warriors and Shaolin only male.
Assign a name to your character, and you’re good to go.
The first few missions you have, or quests, are well-designed. This is what you can probably say when you start playing Age of Wushu: Dynasty. The story is well fleshed out, and is very easy to follow. While auto-pathfinding is available, the game does not have the overly fast pace that you can find in many other auto-pathfinder games in the MMO genre.
You get to fight your first battles right away, and the developers seem to put particular focus in helping you master the combat system.
When entering combat missions, the controls change. On the left side of the screen, you can find the virtual joystick. You use this to steer your character through the combat zone. An arrow guides you where to go - this arrow points to an enemy. In some instances, you can find multiple arrows.
Think of this as your radar, so you’ll know how to fight off the enemies.
There are several actions you can do in combat. First, you have the normal attack, which is already devastating on its own. You can also Parry if the enemy attacks first, and it also builds up your Rage and ultimately trigger a deadly special attack. You can also Feint, which will break your enemy’s defenses.
You also get to carry two skills into battle. You can customize your skill set from your profile anytime, simply by tapping on your avatar at the top left portion of the screen.
At the end of every mission, you get to fight a boss. Battles return experience points and lots of in-game currency to the player.
Players are encouraged to join Guilds. Guilds will help you form parties with which you can go on a looting spree in the Endless Dungeon.
For a mobile game, Age of Wushu: Dynasty is an impressive package of enjoyment, great combat system and several opportunities for building a community with other players.
